Agronomy FAQ

What is 4R?

The agriculture community is launching a proactive, responsible commitment aimed at the long-term improvement of Lake Erie’s water quality.

This new 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification Program encourages agricultural retailers, service providers and other certified professionals to adopt proven best practices through the 4Rs, which refers to using the Right Source of Nutrients at the Right Rate and Right Time in the Right Place.

This approach provides a science-based framework for plant nutrition management and sustained crop production, while considering specific individual farms’ needs.

What is a CCA?

A CCA is a certified crop advisor.  In order to obtain your CCA certification, rigorous testing and additional continuing education are required in all major agronomic disciplines.  The Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) and Certified Professional Agronomist (CPAg) programs of the American Society of Agronomy are the benchmarks of professionalism.

How frequently should my soil be tested?

Most sites should be sampled at least every three to four years. On sites where rapid changes in fertility (particularly decreases) are expected due to higher than expected yields, or when high-value crops are involved, shorter sampling intervals (1 to 2 years) are recommended. Regardless of the sampling interval, records of changes in soil test values over time should be kept for each site tested.

What’s the best way to manage herbicide resistant weeds?

The most critical component to managing resistant weeds is utilizing multiple, effective modes of action.  In the case of waterhemp, utilizing effective burn down products and layered residuals is the best approach.  For more information contact your Mercer Landmark agronomist.

Do all these plant health products really do what they say?

It’s important to understand your unique soils, plant genetics and environmental conditions to determine the right product to improve your yields and provide a positive return on investment.  Your local Mercer Landmark agronomist can help guide your through the decision making process to help you choose the right products for your farm.
